A Free Library Card is the Ticket to Back-to-School Savings
September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Massanutten Regional Library joins with American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that students have the most important school supply of all—a free library card.
Resources at the Massanutten Regional Library are available to anyone who has a library card. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs, and services that support academic achievement.
“A great database to encourage the Virginia state SOL’s, K-12th
grade, is Learning Express
,” states Susan Versen, Head of the Reference Department at Massanutten Regional Main Library, downtown Harrisonburg. “Learning Express
can re-enforce math, writing, grammar, reading comprehension, and social study skills in the public school area,” she emphasizes.
Learning Express can also aid with GED preparation, job researching, workplace skills, citizenship, and the Spanish language.
Another helpful database is Literati Public.
This database has educational content for the K-12 curriculum, informational videos and tutorials, and interactive discovery tools. Children can receive on-line help with homework questions Monday through Thursday
3 PM--9PM, and on Saturday, 9 AM-3 PM.
Many foreign languages can be learned on Mango Languages through the MRL website.
“Our library provides all types of students with the tools they need to succeed,”
re-enforces MRL Library Director Lois Jones. “We provide students with exciting and engaging programs that make learning fun and resources that they can access from the library or from home—all with a free library card. It is for these reasons that a library card is the most important school supply of all.”
To sign up for a library card, one will need a picture ID, proof of city or county residence in the library service area, and a parental or legal guardian signature if one is under 18 years of age.
