The MRL Big Read: What Page Are YOU On? Join us as a community of readers as we gather to celebrate Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird

In conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts, Arts Midwest and with support from generous local partners, we invite our entire community to be a part of our Big Read by participating in events and programs for readers of all ages and abilities.
Now through November 2, become part of a national movement to restore reading to the center of American culture. We're excited to update you on the following: We've just received another shipment of free books! Limited copies in English and Spanish are available aon a first come, first served basis. Please contact your local branch to see if they have copies remaining. We're pleased to announce that all Rockingham County High Schools as well as Harrisonburg High School have participated in The Big Read! Over 1,000 free books, classroom guides, companion CDs and teacher's guides have already been distributed/ 100 free books and public readings took place at Dayton Autumn Celebration October 6 and public readings at Broadway Fall Festival on October 20. Our online blog on this site by Harrisonburg High School showcases student experiences with the literature. Tolerance Today panel discussion on the themes of justic and toleance in the book was held October 2. More than 50 people participated in this enlightening discussion! Book club challenges continue as currently over 30 area book clubs have made Mockingbird, their October read! Free screenings of the award-winning movie starring Gregory Peck at Court Square Theatre were shown October 7 and 9 to large, enthusiastic crowds. An Atticus/Scout/Jem costume contest will be held at the Main Branch after Trick or Treating on the Square on October 27 at 1:30PM. Final celebration at the November 2 Museum and Gallery Walk featuring a public reading by Senator Mark Obenshain, a commissioned modern dance piece and performance by the Shenandoah Contemporary Dance Theatre, theatrical vignettes from the book performed by student actors, and the unveiling of a mural mosaic at MRL! Big Read prize contests continue to be held weekly October. Enter at your local branch to win a family fun basket valued at over $200!
