These new hours will help MRL serve the community even better, providing additional hours that patrons can access collections, services, and spaces. These additional hours increase the total weekly hours MRL branches are open to 270 hours per week.

MRL reached a decision on these additional hours of operation based on factors including community member data--including MRL’s Community Survey and meetings in Summer 2023--as well as increased funding generously provided from the localities we serve, the City of Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, and Page County.

“I’m so happy that we will be able to serve more of our community members at times that they are able to visit the library,” said Library Director Zach Elder. “Anytime we are able to be more inclusive and meet the needs of our patrons gives us more chances to be the welcoming heart of our community where all can come to learn, discover, create, and connect.”

Already MRL is seeing increased use and visits in 2024. In the most recent fiscal year, MRL cardholders checked-out a record 863,000+ items and community members visited the library more than 236,000 times. In the most recent Summer Reading Challenge, children recorded more than 2.3 million minutes of reading, a full million more than the year before.

Prior to January, MRL will be recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training multiple part-time staff in order to be ready for the additional operating hours. You can find information on and applications for the new positions by visiting www.mrlib.org/jobs or clicking this link
