Adventure begins at your library this summer as MRL's Summer Reading Challenge takes place June 3, 2024-August 4, 2024. MRL welcomes people of all ages - from birth through adults- to take part in the fun this summer!
Participating is easy as 1, 2, 3!
- Register through Beanstack at this link (or by clicking the logo below) starting June 3. Be sure to include your name and/or phone number so we can contact you if you win a prize drawing!
- Track your reading through the web browser or app version and earn prizes!
- Attend free events! With over 120 events happening this summer, there's something for every age and interest! Click here for our full calendar!
Who can participate in MRL's Summer Reading Challenge?
Everyone! From birth to 99+ all people in MRL's service area are welcome to join in the fun!
How does the Summer Reading Challenge work?
Ages 0-11:
- Log minutes spent reading or listening to books. You can even set a timer in Beanstack to count the minutes for you!
- Earn prizes and coupons for FREE food and other goodies for every 120 minutes of reading.
- Read 600 minutes and you’ll receive more coupons for FREE goodies and a FREE book.
- Every 120 minutes logged earns 2 raffle tickets for a prize drawing. You can choose what prize raffles you'd like to enter with these tickets through Beanstack. Click here to see the full list of kids' prizes
- Pick up your Free Friday wristband at your local branch to gain free admission to the businesses below!

Ages 12-17:
- Log books when finished reading.
- Earn prizes and coupons for FREE food and other goodies for every book read.
- Read 5 books and you’ll receive more coupons for FREE goodies and a FREE book.
- Every book logged earns 2 raffle tickets. You can choose what prize raffles you'd like to enter with these tickets through Beanstack. Click here to see the full list of older kids' prizes!
- Pick up your Free Friday wristband at your local branch to gain free admission to the businesses below!

Ages 18+:
- Log books when finished reading.
- Every book logged during the week enters you into the weekly prize drawing.
- Every book logged during the summer enters you into the grand prize raffle at the end of the program. Click here to see the listing of prizes in the adult raffle!
Additional notes:
- Book titles and authors can be listed for each book logged, but they are not required.
- For an Apple device, Beanstack needs iOS 16.0 to run; older devices may not be compatible.

Free Fridays ... Just for MRL Kids!
Free Fridays are back this summer and though adventure begins at your library ... it continues across our Valley too!
Starting June 3rd, after you register online for our 2024 Summer Reading Challenge, stop by any MRL branch to get your Free Friday wristband, which will give registered MRL kids free admission at all these great local businesses! Just wear your FF wristband and you're in (but please be sure to note any restrictions on admission, age or weight, or waivers before you go)!
Save the dates with your family and make plans to take advantage of the free fun for kids at the following businesses:
Mulligan's Golf Center - June 14th 9AM-8PM: Kids from age birth to 17 who show their Free Friday wristband will get one free game of 18 holes mini-golf. Accompanying adults or others without wrist bands pay to play.
Luray Caverns - June 21st 9AM-7PM: Kids from birth to 17 who show their Free Friday wristband receive free admission to the caverns! Accompanying adults and children without wristbands pay full admission.
Horizons Edge Sports Campus - June 28th 2PM-7PM: Free 30 minute Clip 'n Climb session for children 22lbs. or heavier who show their Free Friday wristband. Come to this session or the one on July 26th, or both! Legal guardians must complete and sign the Horizons Edge waiver (found at this link) before a child will be permitted to climb. Must wear closed-toe, closed-heel shoes in order to climb.
Harrisonburg Turks Baseball - July 19th 7:30PM: Kids from birth to 17 who show their Free Friday wristband receive free admission to the game! Accompanying adults and children without wristbands pay full admission.
Horizons Edge Sports Campus - July 26th 2PM-7PM: Free 30 minute Clip 'n Climb session for children 22lbs. or heavier who show their Free Friday wristband. Come to this session or the one on June 28th, or both ! Legal guardians must complete and sign the Horizons Edge waiver (found at this link) before a youth will be permitted to climb. Must wear closed toe closed heel shoes in order to climb.
