MRL Community Story Quilt Project

The Massanutten Regional Library (MRL) Community is invited to participate in the making of our Community Story Quilt as part of MRL's 2025 Big Read program.

About Story Quilts: Story quilts include pictures, images, symbols, fabrics, and textures used to tell a story of the family's life and experiences. Story quilts tell stories in two ways: by the way the quilt is crafted or the story of the person who quilted it—both ways make the quilt memorable. More information on story quilts

Project Details: Each square of the quilt will be designed by a member of the MRL community to highlight an important aspect of their family's traditions/customs, cultural heritage and/or from where their family originates. The colors and designs should represent what the individual finds meaningful to their family heritage.

Community members of all ages are encouraged to participate. Everyone who chooses to participate will receive a 6" by 6" white square of construction paper. On that paper, you may use the medium of your choice (pencil, pen, crayon, market, etc.) to create your quilt square's design. Please put your first name in the bottom right corner of the square before returning it. Completed squares must be returned to your local branch of the MRL system by April 1 in order to be included in the final product.

Submitted squares will be put together by library staff into a quilt format using colored strips of construction paper to form the borders. All pieces will be mounted together on a backing of bulletin board paper, which will allow the quilt(s) to be transported between locations. The number of submissions will determine whether one quilt or multiple smaller quilts will be produced.

The MRL Story Quilt(s) will be on display at the Central Branch of MRL during the Rocktown Author Festival on Saturday, April 12, 2025.
