Summer Reading Challenge

2025 MRL Summer Reading Challenge


MRL's 2025 Summer Reading Challenge engages children and adults in creative and challenging library-based events from June 2 through August 3, 2025. The theme this year is "Color Our World". Open to readers of all ages, SRC features a fun reading challenge, as well as dozens of weekly events throughout the library's seven branches in Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, and Page County for readers of all ages. Using the app Beanstack, patrons of all ages can track their reading and be entered to win prizes. Register on the Beanstack app or in-person at any MRL branch in: Bridgewater, Broadway, Elkton, Grottoes, Harrisonburg, Luray, and Shenandoah! 

How to Participate

  1. Register through Beanstack starting June 2. Be sure to include your name and/or phone number so we can contact you if you win a prize drawing!
  2. Track your reading and bingo progress through the web browser or app version and earn prizes! 
  3. Attend free events! With over 100 events happening this summer, there's something for every age and interest! See the full Summer Reading Challenge event list below.

Ages 0-11:

  • Log minutes spent reading or listening to books. You can even set a timer in Beanstack to count the minutes for you!
  • Earn prizes and coupons for FREE food and other goodies for every 120 minutes of reading.
  • Read 600 minutes and you'll receive more coupons for FREE goodies and a FREE book.
  • After the first 600 minutes, every 120 minutes logged earns 2 raffle tickets for a prize drawing. You can choose what prize raffles you'd like to enter with these tickets through Beanstack. 
  • Pick up your Free Friday wristband at your local branch to gain free admission to the businesses below! 

Ages 12-17:

  • Log books when finished reading.
  • Earn prizes and coupons for FREE food and other goodies for every book read.
  • Read 5 books and you'll receive more coupons for FREE goodies and a FREE book.
  • After the first 5 books, every book logged earns 2 raffle tickets. You can choose what prize raffles you'd like to enter with these tickets through Beanstack.
  • Pick up your Free Friday wristband at your local branch to gain free admission to the businesses below!

Ages 18+:

  • Log books when finished reading or activities when you complete them.
  • Every book or activity you log enters you into weekly drawings for prizes.
  • Earn up to 27 tickets. You can choose what prize raffles you'd like to enter with these tickets through Beanstack.
  • Once you fill up the Bingo board, you will have completed the Summer Reading Challenge and you will no longer receive tickets.

    Celebrate our favorite boy wizard's birthday with fun for the whole family at Feel the Rain Brothers Brew Co. on Saturday, August 2nd, starting at noon! There will be crafts for kids until 6pm (or until supplies last), bingo for a chance to win a prize, a movie marathon, and both non-alcoholic and alcoholic Butterbeer for sale, too! Plus, part of Butterbeer sales for the day will be donated to MRL, thanks to our good - and generous - friends at Brothers! From 4-6pm, adults can test their Harry Potter knowledge in a special HP Trivia co-hosted by MRL! Come show your House colors while showing support of MRL and a great, community-focused local business and help us wish Harry the happiest of birthdays!

    All ages are invited to celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Challenge with us at Sage Bird Ciderworks in Harrisonburg! Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase, and a food truck will be on site. Enjoy fun crafts, build your TBR list with recommendations from others, get read-alike suggestions for the most-read books of the Summer Reading Challenge, and browse a market with bookish items from local vendors!

    Do you want to exercise AND read more? We've got the perfect seasonal book club for you! Adults can join us at Bridgewater Retirement Community's Crist Farm Walking Trails every 3rd Tuesday of the month (from June to October) to walk and chat about the monthly book pick. The first hour will be dedicated to walking the beautiful trail, and the second hour will be the book discussion! Registration is politely requested for planning purposes. We'll meet at the entrance closest to Oakdale Park!

    Adults: investigate a triple murder set in a historic theatre, reminiscent of The Phantom of the Opera! A renowned Broadway director purchased an old theatre, spending years restoring it for a specific production - a tale of crime and betrayal based on a true story. Rumored to have ghosts, the theatre had closed during the Great Depression and fallen into disrepair, and unexplained accidents and disappearing actors have plagued the days leading up to opening night! Two stars have been killed by an electrical line, and a third man has died in the aisle. Everyone in the theatre is a suspect!
