Massanutten Regional Library’s annual FREE Summer Reading Program returns June 3, 2024 and runs through August 4, 2024, with the goal of encouraging thousands of Valley residents to read alongside MRL this summer. Themed “Adventure Begins at Your Library,” the free reading incentive program takes place at all seven MRL branches and includes 120+ special events - for all ages and interests - throughout the Valley.
Initially designed to combat the learning and reading skills loss experienced by many children during the summer school holidays, MRL’s Summer Reading Program now focuses on encouraging children and adults to read all summer long as part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Participants may sign up for free at mrlib.org/src and log their reading through Beanstack, an online tracking program that also includes a free app. Once registered, participants are eligible for prize rewards and drawings, and are invited to attend special events for all ages throughout the summer, thanks to generous support from local business partners. Registration for the Summer Reading Program is also available in person at any MRL branch.
Some featured children’s events in this year’s program include “Free Fridays” admission to local entertainment venues, weekly teen-only programs, STEM and art activities, special Story Times with area first-responders, the Harrisonburg Turks, New Market Rebels, and other community partners, a family fort-building program and special, six live Science Heroes science shows.
Adult events this summer include programs on the: the Camino de Santiago, Process Art, the USS Indianapolis, FandomFest, watercolor painting, ecological gardening, conservation photography, author talks, a steampunk interactive murder mystery, and a Swiftie party that will be fun for all ages!
