Massanutten Regional Library’s annual FREE Summer Reading Challenge returns June 2, 2025 and runs through August 3, 2025 to encourage thousands of Valley residents to read alongside MRL this summer. Featuring the theme, “Color Our World,” the free reading incentive program takes place at all seven MRL branches and includes 100+ special events - for all ages and interests - throughout the Valley.
Initially designed to combat the learning and reading skills loss experienced by many children during the summer school holidays, MRL’s Summer Reading Challenge now focuses on encouraging children and adults to read all summer long as part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Participants may sign up for free at mrlib.org/src and log their reading through Beanstack, an online tracking program that also includes a free app. Once registered, participants are eligible for prize rewards and drawings, and are invited to attend special events for all ages throughout the summer, thanks to generous support from local business partners. This year, the adult Summer Reading Challenge will be slightly different, with a bingo challenge including new ways to earn tickets like attending library programs or signing up for our newsletter. Registration for the Summer Reading Program is also available in person at any MRL branch.
This year, MRL will be having a kickoff celebration for all ages at Restless Moons Brewing on Sunday, June 1 from 2-4pm featuring activities, fun, and drinks for all ages!
Some featured children’s events in this year’s program include “Free Fridays” admission to local entertainment venues, regular teen-only programs, art activities, special Story Times with area first-responders, the Harrisonburg Turks, New Market Rebels, and other community partners, a family fort-building program and more!
Adult events this summer include: Nature Walks at the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum, a watch-party for a virtual talk with author Lisa Jewell, a calligraphy class, diamond painting, and even a special 90’s-themed Adult’s Night Out!
