Massanutten Regional Library (MRL) is pleased to announce its first-ever Adult Spelling Bee fundraiser in partnership with Restless Moons Brewing, taking place on Saturday, August 16 from 6-9pm in Downtown Harrisonburg.
This lively event invites community members to test their spelling skills in a fun, lightly competitive atmosphere—all while supporting the library’s vital programs across Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, and Page County.
“We’re honored that Jeff Moon [of Restless Moons] approached us with this fantastic idea,” said Megan Medeiros, MRL’s Director of Advancement. “It’s a creative and entertaining way to connect with the community and raise funds for our beloved library system.”
Adults interested in competing can register through MRL’s website with a $5 donation to the library. There are a maximum of 20 spots available for spellers; attendance for audience members is free and open to the public. During the bee, spellers and attendees alike can purchase lifelines for a $5 donation to the library. Lifelines include the following:
- Elimination Rescue: use this card to spare yourself from elimination, speller can stay in the round after being eliminated.
- Skip a Word: use this card to get a new word, speller can get a different word than they were given but must spell the new word correctly to remain.
- Pass a Word: use this card to inflict another speller with your word, speller can pass their word onto another speller who will then have to spell it correctly to remain.
- Phone a Friend: use this card to ask someone in the audience how to spell the word, speller can ask the entire audience how to spell the word and choose from the shouted answers the correct spelling.
Each speller can use a maximum of two lifelines during the bee. Prizes include a Restless Moons Mug Club Membership ($100 value) for the winner and a $50 Parentheses Books gift card for the runner-up.
Join us for a night of spelling, laughter, and community spirit—all in support of Massanutten Regional Library.
